Day 9: Coyote Buttes South

Thumbnail Glen Canyon Dam
This day we took a closer look at the Glen Canyon Dam that we already passed several times. Then, we visited the Paria Ranger Station to check out the wheater and the conditions of the road to the Coyote Buttes South. After providing us with information, the friendly ranger wished us good luck and we left.

The road was sandy, but not as bad as some others that we already experienced. We spent the afternoon and evening in the area and enjoyed the terrific landscape. Some more information about the area: http://www.synnatschke.de/cbs/cbs.html

Thumbnail Madness
If a god created this world, he must have been on drugs when he created this part: The folded layers of thin sandstone are pure madness! Below are two panoramas, that dear Tsuki stitched together:

Thumbnail Purple Rain
This is actually rain, beeing illuminated by the setting sun. An awsome sight! The whole day, weird wheater accompanied us. Lots of clouds, thunder, much lightning, but no single drop of rain actually touched us.
Thumbnail "Dali Rock"
I think that is the way some people call it. I knew it from photos and was hoping to find it, but I did not, until at last I stumbled over it by accidence when we were returning to our car. The light was gone and it was pretty dark already, but I like the picture anyway!

After the sun had set, we hopped into the car and headed to the "White Pocket", an area close by. We were planning to spend the night in the car and get up early in the morning, so we would be able to catch the sunrise at the White Pocket.

It was already dark, we were still driving, and we were looking forward to the spaghetti we planned to cook, and we suddenly got stuck in the deep sand. We got our headlights, the shovel and started to dig the sand away under the car, while listening to the howls of the coyotes. We also put some wood next to the tires and after 10 minutes we were back on our way. Finally, we parked and could cook and eat our spaghetti... :)
