2007-11-25: Haast - Punakaiki

Thumbnail Breakfast in Haast
Some "flat white" in the morning in a small cafe in Haast. Then we started to drive North on the West-Coast of the South-Island, always looking to the East to the great forest. :)

Thumbnail Forest to the east
The Lonely Planet writes that it seems more easy to walk *over* the forest in this region than to walk *through* it. Full ack!! :)
Thumbnail Fern on fern
Now this is weird: Those little ferns seem so keen on growing that they don't bother getting to the ground first -- why not just grow on the next frond of the mother-plant?

At the ship's creek (or something like that) we went into a short swamp-forest-walkway. The forest was so incredble that I was actually thinking of just sitting down on the boardwalk and start weeping. However, I took photos instead, so here they are:

Thumbnail Fox Glacier
Heading North, we made a quick stop to take a look at the Fox Glacier. (this photo and the next 4) Tsuki even saw some people on the top of the impressivly high tongue of ice, I guess the had more time than we had.

You don't realize it when looking at the photo, but those things are huge. They can easily be as big as a closed fist.

...of this photo. But the original is way better. :( I found the original on the hongmeigui-website, I posted quite some photos from there on a former "article" in the personal-section of this website.

Thumbnail Punakaiki
A nice welcome awaited us in Punakaiki. If You happen to need a place to stay in this area some day, go for it: Arapuna Studios. This is free advertisement because I like the "product". :) Thanks again, Deborah!
